WATER AND POWER DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (WAPDA)

The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established through an act of parliament in February 1958 for integrated and rapid development and maintenance of water and power resources of the country. This includes controlling soil salinity and water logging to strengthen the predominantly agricultural economy of the country.

As per the charter (amended in March 1959), WAPDA has been assigned the duties of investigation, planning and execution of projects and schemes for:

  • Generation, Transmission, and Distribution of Power
  • Irrigation, Water Supply, and Drainage
  • Prevention of Water Logging and Reclamation of Saline Land

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide efficient and sustainable management of water and power resources in Pakistan. This mission is translated into clear objectives, enabling specific outcomes aligned with our long-term vision.

Vision

To achieve and maintain a high degree of efficiency, reliability, and responsiveness as the principal authority for power and water distribution in Pakistan.

The Authority

The Authority comprises a Chairman and three Members, each heading a key wing: Water, Power, and Finance. These Members manage the affairs of their respective wings through General Managers to ensure streamlined operations.

Over the past 65 years, WAPDA has developed its human resource into a reservoir of knowledge, competence, and technical expertise. This has been achieved through targeted training programs and hands-on experience gained from executing major national development projects.
